Quezztion of the Moment (aka ?OM or QOM)

Prezzenting the revised version of our BW?, also formerly known as the ?OW, the Quezztion of the Moment! Since our group had a split decision on whether or not to keep this feature, I've agreed to maintain a more loosely based version of it. Here's how it workzz: In keeping with our tradition, I'll begin by posting a quezztion on a Sunday and give memberzz two weeks to respond. During those two weeks, anyone can pm me with a request to post the next ?OM. This request can come in one of two forms: 1) Send me the instructions for your quezztion and I will post for you; OR 2) Let me know that you want to post the next quezztion yourself. If there are multiple requests, I will generate a waiting list on a first come first served basis. On the other hand, if I don't get any requests, I will post the next ?OM. Finally, if four ?OMs in a row go unanswered, I think we can all agree that this feature needs to be retired from our group.

Now, onto the good shtuff--the quezztion! Independence Day is just around the corner, but for the younger me, my freedom couldn't come soon enough. When did you realize you could make it on your own?

I think I truly realized I could make it on my own after my now ex-husband and I split up. Up to that point, I'd never lived alone - I went from my parents house to living with a roommate to living with my then boyfriend/now ex-husband. I never really had to be completely self-sufficient - there was always someone else to split expenses, responsibilities, etc.

Well, to wax poetic, I've always been lucky enough to have the love & emotional support of family & friends, so in a sense I've never been "on my own"...

But I "get" what the queZZtion is asking. To me, it's one of two moments. First, when I moved to NYC at age 18 to go to NYU. My parents paid for my tuition but in every other life aspect, I was on my own, across the country in another timezone, with not a soul I knew around. There were so many things I had never done on my own - sounds silly but as a teen I had never gone to an airport alone before. Now I do it all the time! Overall, life was tough at first but I loved it & all was ultimately worthwhile.

2nd is in the late 90s when I moved out to Brooklyn from Manhattan's East Village on my own because, like Jen, I had never lived alone before that, I had always had roommates. And I moved to a more isolated area after living in a bustling place for years, & during a dramatic, tumultuous time in my life. Again, very tough on & off, but enjoyable & ultimately worthwhile.
