Quezztion of the Week, 1/4/09

What is your theme song?

In order to answer the first ?OW of 2009, take a moment to reflect on the past year. Feel free to reflect on your lifetime up to this point. Considering all your highs and lows, which song would you assign as your theme song? Or, if you have a few in mind, name one song that would be the hit single on your soundtrack. Please keep in mind that I am not asking for your favorite song, but a song that may define either your life or your current identity. (Lyrics and any video links are a plus!)

For example, when I first saw Brandi Carlile's music video for "The Story," not only was I immediately captivated by the raw emotion she conveyed, but I made an instant connection with the lyrics. Rather than a theme song, I'd say I have an ongoing soundtrack for the different chapters in my life. This song is part of that soundtrack because it probably best encompasses all of my reflections on life and love in the past year.

The Story by Brandi Carlile

All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true... I was made for you

I climbed across the mountain tops
Swam all across the ocean blue
I crossed all the lines and I broke all the rules
But baby I broke them all for you
Oh because even when I was flat broke
You made me feel like a million bucks
You do and I was made for you

You see the smile that's on my mouth
It's hiding the words that don't come out
And all of my friends who think that I'm blessed
They don't know my head is a mess
No, they don't know who I really am
And they don't know what I've been through like you do
And I was made for you.

All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true... I was made for you

Ohh yea it's true... That I was made for you

Brenda gave me the go-ahead to post my THREE songs that are my 2008 theme songs. So here goes!

1) "Happy Go Lucky Me" - I first heard former Police drummer Stewart Copeland's version of this in the John Waters movie "Pecker"; the only video clip I could find was I guess the original by Paul Evans; I chose the Cary Grant visuals. Why this song? Because I made a promise to myself a while back to try to rise above the fray & be positive in life; often I succeed, woohoo! Life's too short you know??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkUeO8LkfEQ&feature=related

I can laugh/When things aint funny
(a haha) Happy go lucky me

Yer, I can smile/When I aint got no money
(a haha) Happy go lucky me

It may sound silly but/Mmm, I don't care
I got the moonlight/I got the sun
I've got the stars above

Me and my filly well, we both share
This slappy go happy, happy go lucky looovve

Well! Life is sweet ..Whooa sweet as honey
(a haha) happy go lucky me

*pause....music and laughing*
(and repeat the above from "it may sound silly")

2) "32 Flavors" by Ani Difranco - This song captures the more introspective, multiple facets of me. Awesome song & awesome live clip of Ani. Some chick covered this in the 90s but I can't get into her version. Oh well, others like it & more $ for Ani!

Squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
and I'm beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head
cause someday you're going to get hungry
and eat most of the words you just said

both my parents taught me about good will
and I have done well by their names
just the kindness I've lavished on strangers
is more than I can explain
still there's many who've turned out their porch lights
just so I would think they were not home
and hid in the dark of their windows
til I'd passed and left them alone

and god help you if you are an ugly girl
course too pretty is also your doom
cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
for the prettiest girl in the room
and god help you if you are a phoenix
and you dare to rise up from the ash
a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying back

I'm not trying to give my life meaning
by demeaning you
and I would like to state for the record
I did everything that I could do
I'm not saying that I'm a saint
I just don't want to live that way
no, I will never be a saint
but I will always say (repeat 1st verse)

3) "For Reasons Unknown" by The Killers - I needed SOMETHING a little more upbeat on this 2008 soundtrack, this is it. As people grow every year, they also shed parts of themselves; the evolution can be both enhancing & bittersweet at once.

I pack my case. I check my face.
I look a little bit older.
I look a little bit colder.
With one deep breath, and one big step, I move a little bit closer.
I move a little bit closer.
For reasons unknown.

I cock my stride. * I flew and flied.
I know if destiny’s kind, I’ve got the rest of my mind.
But my heart, it don’t beat, it don’t beat the way it used to.
And my eyes, they don’t see you no more.
And my lips, they don’t kiss, they don’t kiss the way they used to, and my eyes don’t recognize you no more.

For reasons unknown; for reasons unknown.

There was an open chair.
We sat down in the open chair.
I said if destiny’s kind, i’ve got the rest of my mind.
But my heart, it don’t beat... (repeat above)
For reasons unknown; for reasons unknown.

Here latley my them song would be Jesus take the Wheel by Carrie Underwood, it's not my fave by any means, but it pretty much covers where I'm at in life right now. This past year was pretty much hell on lots of diffrent personal levals, and I need to let go of the things that can't be changed and deal with the ones that can.

She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati
On a snow white Christmas Eve
Going home to see her Mama and her Daddy with the baby in the backseat
Fifty miles to go and she was running low on faith and gasoline
It'd been a long hard year
She had a lot on her mind and she didn't pay attention
she was going way too fast
Before she knew it she was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both their lives flash before her eyes
She didn't even have time to cry
She was sooo scared
She threw her hands up in the air

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel

It was still getting colder when she made it to the shoulder
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw that baby in the backseat sleeping like a rock
And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way
I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
So from now on tonight

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on

Ooh, Jesus take the wheel
Ooh, I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
From this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel
Ooh, take it, take it from me
Ooh ooh wah ah ooh ooh ooh

Here's my song for 2008: "Free To Be Me" by Francesca Battistelli (from the album My Paper Heart). I picked this song because I feel like I'm finally getting over things that have happened in the past. I love this song, I did a search for the video but I haven't watched it yet:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3guAGk5Tm8o

At twenty years of age
I'm still looking for a dream
A war is already waged for my destiny
But You've already won the battle
And You've got great plans for me
Though I can't always see, 'cause...

I got a couple dents in my fender
Got a couple rips in my jeans
Try to fit the pieces together
But perfection is my enemy
And on my own I'm so clumsy
But on Your shoulders I can see
I'm free to be me

When I was just a girl
I thought I had it figured out
See my life will turn out right
And I'll make it here somehow
But things don't always come that easy
And sometimes I would doubt, 'cause...

And you're free to be you

Sometimes I believe
That I can do anything
Yet other times I think
I've got nothing good to bring

But You look at my heart and you tell me
That I've got all You seek
And it's easy to believe, even though...

And you're free to be you
